Differences & Similarities From Dressage and Hunt Seat • Ride one handed • Free hand stays square with the other hand with elbow bent • Longer stirrups than Hunt Seat • Sit more on your seat bones than your pelvic bone (sit straight up instead of forward) • No posting ever (always sitting trot) • Equitation still same as far as square shoulders, sitting tall, chin up, legs correct. • Terms: • Jog = trot (supposed to be slower) • Lope = canter (supposed to be slower)
Western Tack • Western Saddles • Cannot hold the horn • Western Bridles • Normally split reins, hold in ONE hand • Never allowed to touch with two hands
Western Attire • Show Shirt • Styles vary throughout the years • Hat • Made of Beaver fur • Boots • Match chaps • Styles differ each year • Spurs optional • Chaps • To complete the look • Made of suede or leather

Reining • IHSA uses their own pattern book, AQHA patterns or NRHA patterns. • All patterns are different but contain same elements • Large, fast circles • Small, slow circles • Sliding stops • Spins • Backing up • Emphasis on simetrical circles, straight lines, and control • Lope only, NO jogging • Difference: We have to EQUITATE • Traditional Reining Pattern
