  1. Deaf Awareness Project The purpose of the Deaf Awareness Project is to draw attention to deaf people, their culture, accomplishments and their issues.

Iconic Sign Art Requirements • 8.5 x 11” minimum size • Use color • Should be visible from about 15 feet away • Name/class in SW on back • English translation on front • SignWriting translation on front • Hands are pictured (may print out / trace) • Motion is shown (arrows) • A picture is used to describe your iconic sign • The sign chosen must be truly iconic

Poster Ideas, ASL 1-2 • Make & present posters (basic info on Deaf & ASL- ASL 1-2): • How Deaf people view themselves (include examples of famous and accomplished deaf people) • The origin of ASL (Laurent Clerc, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, many different sign languages throughout the world, first grade school for the Deaf, first University for the Deaf) • The “Dark Ages” for the Deaf (Alexander Graham Bell, nativism/eugenics, Milan Congress of 1880, residential schools before and after Milan Congress) • Communication strategies between deaf/hearing (gesture, drawing, writing, using an interpreter, difficulty lipreading, polite ways to get a Deaf person’s attention) • Visual Devices for alerting and communication http://www2.bakersfieldcollege.edu/tmoran/asl1%20posters.htm
