    1. The Effects of Visual Mapping Tools on Fourth Grade Students Motivation to Pre-write

    2. Question Does using a visual mapping tool enhance motivation among a variety of skill level fourth grade students with regards to pre-writing strategies?

    3. Hypothesis It was hypothesized that there would be a difference in motivation when completing pre-writing activities for those students using a visual mapping tool.

    4. Procedure The students completed a prewriting activity using paper and pencil. A posttest was given to the students after participation in a prewriting activity using paper and pencil. This posttest served as the pretest for the instruction using the Inspiration software. The students then completed a prewriting activity using the Inspiration software. The students were then given the posttest a second time at the conclusion of instruction using the Inspiration software. The posttest measured their motivation after paper and pencil instruction, before technology instruction, and after technology instruction.

    5. Instrument The instrument used was a researcher designed survey that allowed the students to agree, disagree, or remain unsure about their motivation when prewriting. The belief statements were as follows: 1. I love to write. 2. This lesson made me like writing essays. 3. I felt confident when I was brainstorming. 4. The prewriting activity helped me organize my thoughts. 5. Through the prewriting activity, I was able to brainstorm enough ideas to write an essay. 6. The prewriting activity was easy to complete. 7. I completed the activity, but I asked many questions. 8. I thought the prewriting activity was fun. 9. I was interested in the prewriting portion of the lesson. 10. Overall I enjoyed the writing lesson this week.

    13. Conclusion Through this research, the results have shown that students would prefer to pre-write using Inspiration rather than paper and pencil. The students were excited about using technology to organize their thoughts and ideas. This research has proven that through the use of technology, students become more motivated in the prewriting process.

    14. Recommendations If this study or a similar study was to be conducted, I would recommend comparing different ability groups. It would also be recommended to conduct this study on several different grade levels. For the younger grades, Kidspiration would be an appropriate substitution for the Inspiration software. It would also be interesting to see if using technology throughout the entire writing process would increase motivation.
