  1. Geometry Miniature Golf! By: Toni Feroli

  2. Purpose for in the Classroom To provide students with a real world connection. To let students see how geometry can be used to construct. For students to take concepts learned and apply them to real world situations.

  3. Goal & Objectives Goal: Students will create a miniature golf hole and a path for a golf ball to follow in order to make a hole-in one by using reflection of a point over a line. Objectives: Students will construct a unique miniature golf hole by using graph paper, a straightedge, and colored pencils with 98% accuracy. (Computer program like Geometer’s Sketchpad may also be used if available). Students will use a copy of the original golf hole created to find a path for the golf ball to follow banking off of at least two walls in order to make a hole-in one by reflecting a point over a line using a geo reflector with 90% accuracy.

  4. Materials Needed Graph Paper A straightedge (ruler) Geo Reflector Colored Pencils

  5. Reflecting Over Any Line Each point of a reflected image is the same distance from the line of reflection as the corresponding point of the original figure. In other words, the line of reflection lies directly in the middle between the figure and its image -- it is the perpendicular bisector of the segment joining any point to its image. Keep this idea in mind when working with lines of reflections that are neither the x-axis nor the y-axis.

  6. Step 1: Students will create a unique miniature golf hole using graph paper, a straightedge, and colored pencils. Step 2: Students will Locate and label the hole (H) and the beginning position of the golf ball (B) on their miniature golf hole. Step 3: Students will make a copy/duplicate of their miniature golf hole. Step 4: Students will label the coordinates of (H) and (B). How it Works!

  7. Step 5: Students will Use a geo reflector to reflect the point of the hole (H) and golf ball (B) over the walls of their miniature golf hole. Step 6: Students will label these new points (H1) and (B2) along with the coordinate of each point. How it Works!

  8. Step 7: Students will use a straightedge to connect (H1) and (B2). Step 8: Students will connect the hole (H) to the point of intersection of the wall where (H1) hits. Step 9: Students will connect the golf ball (B) to the point of intersection of the wall where (B1) hits. Step 10: Student will create the path of the golf ball to the hole using a solid line.   10. Higher Level Thinking Students will be given three bonus questions to think about concepts they have already learned about. Bonus Questions 1. Find the slope of the line connecting points (H1) and (B1). 2. Find the equation of the line of each wall that was used to reflect point (H) and (B) over. 3. Rotate your miniature golf hole and find the path that the golf ball will follow of the rotated image.

  11. Geometry Miniature Golf Tournament! • Objective: • Students will find the path of the golf ball to follow • to make a hole-in one of five other students • miniature golf hole creations by using a geo • reflector and straightedge • with 95% accuracy. • Students will use the same procedure they used • when they constructed their path for the golf ball • to follow. • Students will work on this individually.
