Formation of Hydro- and Atmosphere: The Story of Earth's Origins

Discover how Earth's Hydro- and Atmosphere were formed during the planet's early molten days, leading to the stability of the planet and the creation of essential elements like water and atmosphere through processes involving cooling, volcanic activity, and precipitation.

  1. Students will know how the Hydro- and Atmosphere was formed

  2. Back in the beginning of the earth, it was believed our planet was entirely molten. The cooling started as heavier materials sunk to the core and lighter ones rose to the top. This allowed for stability in the planet.

  3. The surface started to form when the earth cooled. Cooling also happened via ice covered comets. As they crashed into the earth, the ice lowered the temperature of the lava enough for it to solidify.

  4. Volcanoes formed when the outer layer of the earth solidified into the crust. The pressure of the under layers forced the volcanoes to outgas. When this happened, H2O shot out along with other gasses.

  5. This produced a stable atmosphere. With the atmosphere came precipitation. This, along with the ice bearing comets created surface water. Eventually this water would cover seventy percent of earth’s surface

  6. How was the Hydrosphere formed?
