  1. As Becometh Saints Ephesians 5:3

  2. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is A Saint? www.catholic.org How does the Church choose saints? Canonization, the process the Church uses to name a saint, has only been used since the tenth century. For hundreds of years, starting with the first martyrs of the early Church, saints were chosen by public acclaim. Though this was a more democratic way to recognize saints, some saints' stories were distorted by legend and some never existed. Gradually, the bishops and finally the Vatican took over authority for approving saints.

  3. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is A Saint? www.catholic.org In 1983, Pope John Paul II made sweeping changes in the canonization procedure. The process begins after the death of a Catholic whom people regard as holy. Often, the process starts many years after death in order give perspective on the candidate. The local bishop investigates the candidate's life and writings for heroic virtue (or martyrdom) and orthodoxy of doctrine. Then a panel of theologians at the Vatican evaluates the candidate. After approval by the panel and cardinals of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the pope proclaims the candidate "venerable.”

  4. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is A Saint? www.catholic.org The next step, beatification, requires evidence of one miracle (except in the case of martyrs). Since miracles are considered proof that the person is in heaven and can intercede for us, the miracle must take place after the candidate's death and as a result of a specific petition to the candidate. When the pope proclaims the candidate beatified or "blessed," the person can be venerated by a particular region or group of people with whom the person holds special importance.

  5. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is A Saint? www.catholic.org Only after one more miracle will the pope canonize the saint (this includes martyrs as well). The title of saint tells us that the person lived a holy life, is in heaven, and is to be honored by the universal Church. Canonization does not "make" a person a saint; it recognizes what God has already done. Though canonization is infallible and irrevocable, it takes a long time and a lot of effort. So while every person who is canonized is a saint, not every holy person has been canonized. You have probably known many "saints" in your life, and you are called by God to be one yourself.

  6. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is A Saint? • A “saint” by man’s definition is someone who has lived an exceptionally holy life and then is venerated after death via prayers, images, and worship • A “saint” by others’ definition is someone who is sinless … “I don’t claim to be a saint…” • A “saint” by God’s definition is anyone who has been set apart from sin through obedience to the gospel (Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:2)

  7. As Becometh SaintsWho Says What Is Proper? • A “saint” is to live a certain manner of life which is “becoming”; that is, expected, fitting, proper, appropriate (Prov. 11:22) • Who says what is expected, fitting, proper, or appropriate? The world or God? • God sets the standard for all saints (Rom. 1:28; Col. 1:10; 1 Thess. 2:12; 2 Thess. 1:5,11; 3 Jn. 6) • God sets the standard for all saints in the gospel (Eph. 4:1; Phil. 1:27)

  8. As Becometh SaintsWhat Is the Appropriate Life For Saints? • It “becometh” saints to obey the righteous commands of God (Mt. 3:15; Rev. 19:8) • It “becometh” saints to show hospitality (Rom. 16:1-2) • It “becometh” saints to live and speak purely (Eph. 3:3-4) • It “becometh” saints to dress and behave modestly (1 Tim. 2:9-10) • It “becometh” saints to speak the sound doctrine of God’s word (Tit. 2:1)

  9. As Becometh SaintsWhat About You? • Is your conduct “becoming” of a saint as set forth by the gospel? Attendance alone does not determine a saint’s conduct. • We must remember who we are and what we are? • Are you a “saint” by God’s definition? If not, become one today?
