Understanding Addiction: Biological and Learning Models Review

This week's focus on addiction explores the interplay of biological and learning models in understanding behavior. We will identify key terms associated with each approach using colored pens, and define important debates such as Nature vs. Nurture, Free Will vs. Determinism, and Holistic vs. Reductionist perspectives in addiction. By examining Operant Conditioning (OC), Classical Conditioning (CC), and Social Learning Theory (SLT), we will assess where they fit in the ongoing debates. An evaluation of the learning model will also be included, alongside a structured essay plan for effective exam preparation.

  2. Review of biological and learning models of addiction – page 25 • Using 4 coloured pens, identify which key terms match with each approach to explaining addictive behaviour.

  3. Write a definition of each debate under the heading (using a textbook): Nature Nurture Free will Determinism Holistic Reductionist

  4. Debates and the learning model of addiction Draw where OC, CC and SLT and the biological approach stand on each debate Write one elaborated evaluation paragraph for the learning model on page 23 of your booklets. Optional extension task: Write evaluation paragraphs for the learning model on all three debates.

  5. Exam focus – page 24 • Complete the essay plan using the prompts provided. • Include enough detail for the marks available. • Optional: write the essay for homework

  6. Task • Complete page 26 of your booklet: • Read the example answers to the exam questions. • In the first example there are 5 mistakes – correct them. • Mark both answers out of 5 and justify your ideas.
