  4. Professional Life • In 1744, he opened a bookstore and publishingcompany called the Bible and Sun • Wrote and illustrated the first book just for children • First book title: A Pretty Little Pocket Book

Newbery Medal Award • Excellence in children’s literature • Proposed by FredericMelcher • Named in honor of JohnNewbery • Given annually by ALA • Author must be a citizen or resident of the United States • Work must be original • First awarded to Hendrik Willem Van Loon for The Story of Mankind in 1922. • Award carries no monetary value, but brings honor to the writer.
