  2. Abstract The two most successful short range wireless solutions are frequently co-located on the same chip. We in the Bluetooth SIG Smart Energy effort believe each of our technologies have unique strengths that we can contribute to a solution for the Smart Grid. This presentations introduces the new structure of the Bluetooth SIG and proposes a relationship where we can explore the possibilities. Tom Siep, Bluetooth SIG

New structure in the Bluetooth SIG • This October the Bluetooth SIG decided to realign its road mapping process into BETs (Bluetooth Ecosystem Teams) • Mobile Phone • Automotive • CE and PC • Heath and Fitness • Smart Energy • Smart Energy initially promotes “classic” Bluetooth, but will rapidly evolve to “low energy” Tom Siep, Bluetooth SIG

The Business of the BETs • Develop strategy and business development • Act as if they were a full business or a business startup. • Strategy will be different for each BET • Evangelization for the segment • Define/maintain use cases • Establish liaisons • Relationships established by Smart Energy • SGiP • ITU • Others in progress Tom Siep, Bluetooth SIG

Smart Energy BET • Smart Energy definition • devices that participate in the interactions between devices around the home that use or control energy • Primary use case is sensor/actuator-related • Market Segments • metering domain • domestic HVAC (Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning) domain • the appliance domain • command and control of the home to facilitate energy management • External Interaction • press relations • governmental policy bodies • member outreach • standards coordination Tom Siep, Bluetooth SIG

Which technology does what • Technologies • 802.11 exists as the de facto LAN for many homes • Power line also has some advantages • Classic Bluetooth • Low energy Bluetooth excels as a wireless sensor technology • Platforms • Mobile phone – near universal platform for Bluetooth; good penetration for 802.11 • Computers – the reverse of phones • No one technology will “win” Tom Siep, Bluetooth SIG
