  2. What is Diction? • Definition: author’s word choice • elevated (high) or conversational (low) • An author’s use of words is part of their beauty of language and their ability to persuade.

  3. Concise Diction In your own work: • Use clear, authentic writing • Get to the point with the best word choice • Avoid being overly informal • OR overly formal • consider your audience!

  4. Nominalization • Changing the verb into its noun form • Discuss  Discussion • Depend  Dependence • Recognize  Recognition • Elevates the diction • Can sound stuffy or awkward • “I had the knowledge that my speech in English was poor” • vs. • “I knew very well that I spoke English poorly”

  5. Showy Vocabulary • Acting Fancy! • “That was my mental quandary in its nascent state” (Tan). vs. • “That was my dilemma in its earliest state.” • Falicitations on your natal day! vs. • Happy Birthday! • Avoid showy vocabulary

  6. How to Know? • Not a matter of hard-and-fast rules = writing is an art! • You can ask, “Is the fancy word more precise than the more ordinary word?” • It all boils down to KNOWING YOUR AUDIENCE and also your own voice

  7. Practice Time! • Exercise 1 pg. 593 in LOC • When finished – work on your own Rhetorical piece (Day 1) • How does the author use diction effectively?
