  1. The Greatest Exchange Ever Romans 9:24 - 10:4 Pg. 836 (pew Bible)

  2. Let’s Read Romans 9:24-10:4

  3. Romans 9:24 • Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? Paul reminds us we don’t call ourselves.

  4. Exchange • the act or process of substituting one thing for another Merriam-Webster Look for the 7 exchanges Paul presents.

  5. Romans 9:25 Paul reminds the Romans of God’s prophetic promise in the OT: • As he [GOD] saith also in Osee, [Hosee/Hosea] • I will call them my people, which were not my people; • and her beloved, which was not beloved.

  6. Commentary • People who do NOT have a lineage to the group that is identified as God’s chosen people—the Israelites—are now going to be called the people of God. • Those who are were NOT beloved (by God) become beloved.

  7. Romans 9:26 • Paul continues to quote from Hosea 1:10 • And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, • Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

  8. Come to Pass began in Acts 2 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…

  9. Background • You need to understand that the Jews, who worked so hard to keep each and every commandment of God, were struggling with a message of salvation by grace through faith in the Messiah. • This is why there was controversy over the Sabbath, what to eat, and circumcision.

  10. Romans 9:27-28 • [The Prophet Isaiah] Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, • Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: • For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

  11. Only a Remnant • In the new covenant, national origin does NOT matter with God. Though the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea—NOT everyone is going to be saved. • Only a REMNANT will be saved. • Remnant • A Small Surviving Group

  12. Vs. 29 Israel is a nation today because God has preserved them as far as Sodom and Gomorrah.

  13. Romans 9:29 • And as Esaias [Isaiah] said before, • Except the Lord of Sabaoth • refers to God’s all-encompassing lordship of the universe, of everything He has created Romans Commentary

  14. Romans 9:29 • And as Esaias [Isaiah] said before, • Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. Q: Do you think Paul believed in the historical existence of these two cities?

  15. What should come to your mind when you hear Sodom and Gomorrah? Jude 7; Genesis 13:13 & 19

  16. Jude 7 • Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication [gross sexual immorality], and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

  17. Do not stick your head in the sand to the gay agenda in America. Every effort is being made to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the DoD—ultimately, attempting to normalize abnormal behavior.

  18. Romans 9:30 • What shall we say then? • That the Gentiles, • which followed not after righteousness, • have attained to righteousness, • even the righteousness which is of faith.

  19. Romans 9:31 • But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. • Why NOT? See vs. 32

  20. Romans 9:32 • Wherefore? [WHY] • Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law Without regard to being elect, NONE are saved apart from individual FAITH in the gospel.

  21. The doctrine that one becomes righteous in the eyes of God, by grace through faith is a stumbling block to those who desires to contribute to their own redemption, or right standing with God.

  22. Romans 9:32-33 • For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; • As it is written, • Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

  23. Rock of Offense • What was especially offensive was the claim that an accursed one was the Messiah and that faith in this crucified one and not works was necessary for salvation. • Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary

  24. 1st Century Jews could NOT get over the fact that the Apostles were teaching a salvation by grace through faith NOT of works soteriology.

  25. Let’s Hear from the Apostle Peter 1 Peter 2:4-12

  26. Stumble at the Word • And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. What Word?

  27. Mark 1:15 • And saying, • The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

  28. Acts 17:30 • And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Go back to Acts 16:26ff

  29. Turn to Isaiah 28 While I show you Romans 9:33

  30. Romans 9:33 • As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed [disappointed]. Paul quotes from Isaiah 28:16

  31. STUDY NOTE Don’t allow chapter divisions to interfere with your understanding of the entire passage.

  32. Romans 10:1 • Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel [or them] is, that they might be saved. Remember NOT all the children of Abraham are children of Abraham.

  33. Romans 10:2 • For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God,

  34. Romans 10:2-3 • For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, • but not according to knowledge. • For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

  35. Romans 10:4 • For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

  36. This morning, we have some who believe in God who will die and spend all eternity in hell IF they don’t repent and make the great exchange.
