    2. What is Bordetella Pertussis Pertussis is airborne disease that is spread through the respiratory system, which is found in younger children. Some of the major problems that are caused is bronchopneumonia, encephalopathy, and vomiting.

    3. History of Bordetella Pertussis Before the introduction of vaccine, there was average of about 147,271 cases that were reported per year. At least 5,000-10,000 deaths would occur. By the 1940s, there was a decrease in the number of deaths that would occur because of the wild use of vaccine. The disease was found in older children and adults because many were not immune.

    4. Disease by Organism Whooping Cough is cause by the bacteria know as Bortdetella Pertussis. Whooping Cough is a highly contagious disease that normally occurs around the age of four. It is known to be a airborne disease that causes problems in the respiratory system.

    5. Symptoms of Disease In the first stage of whooping cough, the major symptoms are runny nose, mild cough, and low-grade fever. In the second stage, the child has upper respiratory congestion from the thicker nasal discharge. It may last for one to two weeks. The third stage knows as the paroxysmal stage, cause the child to cough five to ten times. This is follow by intake of air and then a whooping sound is let out as the child exhales. This stage last for two to four weeks.

    6. Treatments The are several types of vaccines that has been use to treat the disease: Whole cell vaccine -tend to cause side effects in children and infants. DTP diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis DTPH- is a vaccine that combines DTP and vaccine against Homophiles influenza type b meningitis (hib). DTaP- is a cellular pertussis that uses DTP. (It should only be taken at the fourth and fifth dose.)
