  8. 三、螢火蟲的生活習性 螢火蟲的幼蟲呈蠕蟲狀，身體側扁或稍呈筒形；攝食時會分泌唾液把螺類、蝸牛或其他獵物麻痺，再分泌消化液把獵物肉質溶化，吸食肉汁為主。成蟲通常只吃露水，也有些種類會吃花粉、花蜜；少數種類會捕食其他小蟲；在野外壽命一般為3-7天，但也有長達10-20天者。多數種類由卵至成蟲，各期都會發光；由於他們是夜行性動物，因此只在夜間發光；攝食活動也是以入夜以後為主。所以在白天時，牠們大多靜靜憩息在隱蔽的地方，很少活動，也不發光；但是如果受到騷擾，仍會發光。光是雌雄間求偶的訊號；交尾時，雌雄都會同時發光；交尾時間可長達數十分鐘或數小時。交尾之後，雄蟲在一、兩天內死亡，而雌蟲則在產完卵後香消玉殞
