Johnston County Natural Resource Initiative

Green infrastructure is an interconnected network of green spaces that conserves natural ecosystems. It plays a crucial role in preserving life-sustaining natural systems while integrating conservation with land development. This initiative highlights the importance of elements like parks, working farms, and urban forests as part of a broader ecosystem framework. By prioritizing conservation and utilizing natural systems for infrastructure needs, communities can realize significant cost savings, reduce ongoing maintenance, and enhance property values, all vital for sustainable development.

  2. What is Green Infrastructure? • Interconnected network of green space that conserves natural ecosystem values and functions • Our nation’s natural life sustaining system • Overall Goal: management of natural systems as integral part of development and planning

  3. Green Infrastructure at Work • Systems can contain: • Wilderness Areas and River Corridors • Managed Landscapes such as Parks and Nature Reserves • Working Lands Such as Farms and Forests • Greenways, Street Trees, Green Roofs

  4. What does Green Infrastructure Look Like? • Network of natural and restored native ecosystems and landscape features. • Network features hubs, links and sites. • Hubs anchor green infrastructure networks • Links tie the system together • Sites are smaller than hubs

  5. Green Infrastructure at Work

  6. Why Green Infrastructure? • Integrates conservation and land development/ infrastructure planning. • Helps communities identify and prioritize conservation opportunities.

  7. Why Green Infrastructure? • Smaller startup costs, require less ongoing maintenance, and appreciate in value over time • Maintains essential functions of natural landscapes • Uses natural systems to offset the need for man-made infrastructure • A critical up-front planning initiative
