  1. The conclusion

  2. Three basic parts • Rephrase thesis statement in different words • Summarize the body paragraphs • Leave the reader with something to think about.

  3. Rephrase thesis Original Thesis: • The most significant conflict in the story was person vs. self because General Zaroff hunted to ward off boredom and Rainsfordstruggled with his nerve. Restated: • Although Rainsford was struggling against a psycho-killer hunter, his main conflict came from within the soul.

  4. Summarize body paragraph • Two to three sentences recapping major points. • General Zaroff’s craziness was the real enemy. For goodness sake, he hunted people for sport because he had nothing better to do with his time or money. And Rainsford’s biggest opponent was his fear. Once he overcame his fear, he conquered the enemy.

  5. Reflective commentary • Go back to your hook and rework using a different strategy. • An animal and a man are different creatures. A healthy deer’s main enemy is external: hunters, starvation, human development. However, a healthy man’s greatest enemy is himself: doubt, self-hatred, and mental instability.

  6. The product • Although Rainsford was struggling against a psycho-killer hunter, his main conflict came from within. General Zaroff’s craziness was the real enemy. For goodness sake, he hunted people for sport because he had nothing better to do with his time or money. And Rainsford’s biggest opponent was his fear. Once he overcame his fear, he conquered the enemy. Even though Rainsford was a hunted animal, an animal and a man are different creatures. A healthy deer’s main enemy is external: hunters, starvation, human development. However, a healthy man’s greatest enemy is himself: doubt, self-hatred, and mental instability.

  7. Another example Rainsford had to kill General Zaroff to survive. At first, he didn’t realize this, and he just tried to run and hide. But General Zaroff was too strong and and had too many tools. As soon as Rainsford realized that he could not live if GZ was alive, he came out fighting. He realized what many have learned before him: that it is better to take the offense than the defense in a life or death situation.
