  2. The Five Ws • Who: The Ku Klux Klan. The first two words mean “kyklos,” which means circle in Greek. • What? The Ku Klux Klan was a malicious, Christian group that showed hatred to African Americans, Jews, Catholics, and anyone who wasn’t white • When? It was established during a meeting in Pulaski, Tennessee, by six former Confederate officers, including the famous Nathan Bedford Forrest, who later became its first leader. The first Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 and became popular into southern states by the 1870s. The second one was founded in Georgia in 1915 and the third one was founded in Alabama in 1960. • Where? The first Ku Klux Klan was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee. The second klan was founded in Georgia and the third one was founded in Alabama • Why? The Ku Klux Klan started because the Whites got upset that the African Americans won their freedom after the Civil.

  3. Major Leaders • Also called The Grand Wizard of the Empire • The First Ku Klux Klan Leader • Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877) was the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan between 1867 and 1869. • Second Ku Klux Klan • Hiram Wesley Evans[3] (1881-1966), Imperial Wizard, 1922-1939, during which the KKK experienced its peak in membership.

  4. The Three Klans • The First Klan- 1865-1870s (550,000) • The Second Klan- 1915-1944 (3-6 Million) Peak in 1920-1925 period • The Third Klan- since 1946 (5-6 Thousand)

  5. The second klan The second klan was founded in 1915 and was inspired by the newfound power of the modern mass media. For example, the film, The Birth of a Nation, and anti-immigrant/Semitic* newspaper accounts surrounding the trial and lynching of accused murderer Leo Frank. *relating to or denoting a family of languages that includes Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic, ect.

  6. The third klan The third Klan started up in the 1950s in response to the civil rights movement. The F.B.I. soon became involved and the klan broke up and slowly died down. Though the KKK is still here today, it is widely spread out, with very few numbers, and slowly diminishing.
