4. What is Wiki? • A collaborative website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively. • Every page (content) can be edited by anyone who has access to it. • It can be used effectively as a shared workspace or a shared memory.

5. What is Wiki? (Cont’) • The first wiki was WikiWikiWeb developed by Cunningham in 1995 • Wiki: a Hawaiian-language word for fast, hurry • Named after ‘Wiki Wiki’ Chance RT-52 shuttle bus line that runs between the Honolulu International Airport’s terminals • Intended meaning: To make WikiWikiWeb’s pages quickly editable by its users • Initially Cunningham thought about calling it ‘QuickWeb’, but changed his mind and called it ‘WikiWikiWeb’ • Now there are many different wiki websites and softwares • Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is an example of a wiki in action

Wikispaces- Step 1 & 2 • Set up an account at http://www.wikispaces.com • restrict your wiki (“protect” it) so that only group members may edit the page. • Manage wiki > Invite People >email • Choose topic • a teaching-related topic, such as: • high school math teachers • Elementary school language arts

8. Wikispaces- Step 3 &4 • Find relevant resources • Post links and annotations (explanations of what can be found at the link) • One section on resources related to assistive technologies/ accessibility with at least one contribution per person • Organize and post the resources • “history” tag- Evidence of each person's contribution

9. Wikispaces- Step 5 • Submit • The URL of the Group wiki page should be post to discussion board titled ”Wikis” • Each individual wiki page should be posted via assignments link • Video Tutorial • Note: • No Redo/ Undo tools in wikispaces

What is WebQuest? • A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented online tool for learning. • Inquiry" is defined as "a seeking for truth, information, or knowledge -- seeking information by questioning • The WebQuest model was developed in early 1995 at San Diego State University by Bernie Dodge with Tom March. • It is a learning activity in which most or all of the information that students explore and evaluate comes from the World Wide Web.

What is WebQuest (Cont’)? • A lesson that incorporates research from a variety of Web sites. • WebQuests are designed to use students' time efficiently, because students focus on using information rather than looking for it. • Requires higher level thinking, including synthesis, analysis, problem-solving, creativity and judgment. http://webquest.org/index-create.php

13. How can WebQuests be used in the classroom? • Students work in teams to complete WebQuest assignment. • Teams have specific period of time to complete assignments (1 day-1 month) • Output: papers, presentations…ect.

17. Six elements in a WebQuest • Introduction – Overview of the lesson • Task – results and details of assignments • Process – A description of the learning steps • Resources – Links to relevant online resources • Evaluation – A rubric for the lesson • Conclusion – extending questions

18. Introduction • This is the hook. You want to capture your students and get them excited about the activity (e.g., background information and motivational scenarios) • This should be • Meaningful • Relevant • Motivated • Written at grade level

19. Task • Describe what students will be doing and have accomplished by the end of the WebQuest • The task can • Explain procedures • Identify roles in a group • Provide links to any worksheets or graphic organizers that need to be completed

20. Process • Explain how students should complete the Webquest. • The process should: • List the steps the students will go through • Include any links need to accomplish the tasks • You could have resources embedded with this section

Resources • This is where you will list the web resources for your students • In a Webquest the main resources should be Internet based but you can supplement with non-Web resources (videos, audio cassettes, books, posters, maps, etc.) • This should be: • Relevant • The appropriate grade level and reading level

22. Evaluation • Explain the expectations • The standards should be fair, clear, consistent, and specific to the tasks set

23. Conclusion • Ties everything together and has students reflecting on their learning and process they went through.

24. WebQuest Design Process • Select a Topic • Plan and design your WebQuest • Adapt and enhance existing WebQuests • Search • Identify changes needed • Get author permission • Evaluate and revise your WebQuest as needed
