Who is A Community of Friends? • Nonprofit organization founded in 1988 to provide permanent supportive housing for people who are homeless and living with mental illness • Developed 43 PSH apartment communities throughout Southern California, primarily in Los Angeles and Orange Counties • Active developer: Currently have 1 project under construction, 2 breaking ground in 2014, and 7 in the predevelopment stage

Why is Permanent Supportive Housing important for Orange County? • There are 4,250 people who are homeless in Orange County per the 2013 Homeless Count • There are very little resources (shelters, transitional housing) for people who are homeless in Orange County • People living on the streets is not good for the residential OR business community. • When people are living on the streets, it places enormous financial burden on the healthcare and law enforcement sectors

Tyrol Plaza State College Blvd., Anaheim • 60 apartments, “mixed population” – homeless seniors • along with low-income (not homeless) seniors • Completed construction in 2004 • 1 and 2 bedroom apartments • Community amenities such as computer room, • community kitchen, community garden • Service provider: The B Group

Avenida VillasBall Road, Anaheim • 29 apartments for people who are homeless and living with mental illness • Completed construction in 2012 • 1 and 2 bedroom apartments • Community amenities such as computer room, community kitchen, recreation area with ping-pong table, barbeque and patio area, and children’s playground • Service provider: Telecare of Orange

What can the business community do to get involved in PSH? • Letters of support for PSH projects being proposed in Orange County • Attend Planning Commission and City Council meetings and let them know why PSH is important for the business community • Tell others in the business community and local government that PSH is needed • Attend tours of PSH buildings to experience firsthand the benefits this type of housing provides
