  1. Character Traits Heroes in Literature Catherine Serpa Windsor Middle School Cserpa1@excite.com cserpa@wusd.org

  2. Introduction • I am a 6th grade teacher of a self-contained classroom. We are using an Elements of Literature book in which we are studying Unforgettable Personalities in short stories. • Students will be able to identify various traits that a character in a story has and how those traits affect the outcome of the story.

  3. Lesson Plan • First, students will work on the computer to identify their own personality traits using a self-assessment test. • Students will next partner share to complete a Venn diagram and discuss similarities and differences they possess. • Students will identify which character traits all heroes in the stories possess. • Students will present to the class a discussion of one character, their personality traits, and how they affect the outcome of a story.

  4. Expectations • I looked forward to working and completing this CTAP class in the given amount of time, but found that I needed to study the manual at home. • I expected the CTAP material to be more user friendly and not change so frequently especially toward the end of the semester. • I expected to involve my students in the learning process earlier in the semester.

  5. Successes • Enjoying the camaraderie of teachers in the district. • Finding interesting and useful sites to use. • Exploring the use of PowerPoint, clipart, Excel, and linking sites.

  6. Drawbacks • Many times I felt that I would have liked to have worked on another topic. • The CTAP web sight was extremely difficult to access which made it hard to work at my convenience.

  7. Student Data Analysis

  8. Summary of Revisions What did I change after looking at pre & post tests.

  9. Results • I have learned from this CTAP class. • First, I have learned how to use Transmit, a software program designed to upload and download web pages. Secondly, I have done lots of work developing a web page that I hope to share with other teachers. • Lastly, I learned how to successfully integrate this into my own classroom.

  10. Summary of Revisions After talking to my students, we decided I needed a picture of Maya Angelou’s brother, Bailey. They also suggested doing the people worksheet with other partners. Their best suggestion was for us to do a dramatizations of the hero they chose.

  11. Conclusion • I learned to successfully use the internet to integrate technology into my daily lessons standards based lessons. • Students were able to differentiate important character traits. • Lastly, I learned to use technology; • http://ctap295.ctaponline.org/~cserpa/
