  2. Why is this important? • Helps you relate to the character • Helps you understand what the character is like • Makes the character more real • Helps you to predict what the character might do next

  4. What are some adjectives that come to mind when you think about Candace ?

  5. These are called………….. • CHARACTER TRAITS • descriptive adjectives that tell us the specific qualities of the character (ex: silly, creative, shy, quiet, etc.)

  6. Character traits are NOT: • Emotions (mad, sad, happy) • Emotions change frequently. • Physical traits (tall, fat, skinny) • Character traits develop over time

  7. CLUES AUTHORS USE • Action Clues: Traits are revealed through actions or events. Ex: standing up to a bully = courage • Verbal Clues: Traits are revealed by what the character says and how they say it. Ex: A character yells, “Because I said so!” = bossy • Other Clues: Traits are revealed through physical appearance, how they live, thoughts, feelings, etc.Ex: Sam never cleans his room = messy

  8. LISTEN • As you listen to the story, think about character traits of the main character in the story. • After the story, we will identify character traits of the main character using a graphic organizer.

  9. Physical Traits • Traits of a person that you can see • Ex) Skinny, fat, tall, small, big, round, etc • Words that describe size, shape, length
