  1. PWLS SIG • Area of Interest • the “practical” definition, movement, and storage of E&P well log data. • This group is essentially a cross-vendor, cross-product line user community for well log data store, data conversion, and data transfer products. • Players • operators, service and software providers, government agencies, consultancies, and POSC.

  2. PWLS SIG • Active POSC members include: • Oil companies: ExxonMobil, Shell, Hydro, Statoil • Non-profit: US DOI, Norway NPD • Commercial: Baker Hughes, Flare, Halliburton/Landmark, Oilware, Paradigm, Pathfinder, Schlumberger • Other attendees included: • Oil companies: DONG (Denmark), Shell, Anadarko, BP, Burlington Resources, Oxy, Pioneer Nat. Resources • Commercial: LogTek (Norway), National Oilwell, PetroData, ROQC, Tellus Software, Adaptable Technology, DrillingInfo, GTS Geotech, Volant Solutions

  3. PWLS SIG • History • Evolved from PWLS project Phase 2 • PWLS Project published Version 1 standards in ’01 • 6 major types of acquisition well logging tools addressed • 3 major service companies involved • Classification • Good: based on broad taxonomy of property (measurement) types • Issue: taxonomy was proprietary • Issue: alternate classification was also adopted

  4. PWLS SIG • History • SIG Meetings started in ’03 • More players; more oil company players • Clear need to resolve classification issues • Focus shifted to oil company calculated • PWLS Version 2 released in ’03 • POSC now has rights to the property (measurement) type taxonomy • The alternate classification was eliminated • Class attributes were added to enhance searching • Joined and Interpreted curve mnemonics defined • Supported in PPDM V3.7 work

  5. PWLS SIG • History • SIG Meetings in ‘04 • Log / Service Classification use by Norway’s DISKOS (SINAS) described • Changes to joined and interpreted specifications proposed by Shell • Interest expressed in expanding the coverage of acquisition curve types • SIG and Vendor Meetings • BakerAtlas confirmed that RECALL support for PWLS will be upgraded from Version 1 to Version 2 in early ’05 • RECALL is a product in its own right and it is the also underlying engine beneath PetroBank from Landmark.

  6. POSC Standards & SIGs

  7. PWLS SIG • What’s Next? • Complete processing of Shell’s Change Requests • Expand Acquisition Curve Classification Coverage • More types of curves • Additional acquisition service companies • Improve user documentation and Web Service functionality • Continue work on Calibrated Image specifications • Q1 review of initial results

  8. Shell’s Change Requests • We try to balance needs of one organization with needs of industry as a whole. • General issues: • Level of granularity • Scope – Some of Shell’s requests are beyond current PWLS scope – These will be addressed later on. • Mnemonic spelling • We are in the process of reviewing detailed issues.
