  2. Thomas Hooker • Puritan minister • Left Mass. because governor had too much power • Wanted strict limits on govt. • Founded colony of Connecticut • Wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut • Gave vote to all male property owners • Expanded the idea of representative govt.

  3. Roger Williams • Puritan minister • Founded colony of R.I. • Believed in separation of Church and State • Believed in religious tolerance (inc. Catholics and Jews) • No requirement to attend church • All white men received the right to vote

  4. Anne Hutchinson • Expressed her religious views and questioned the established Church • Stood up to the Puritan leaders • Was expelled from Mass. • Settled in Portsmouth, R.I. • Symbol of the struggle for religious freedom • Proved that women can have intelligent, individual opinions

  5. Peter Stuyvesant • Governor of New Netherland • Unpopular due to harsh rule and heavy taxes • Refused people a voice in the govt. • Expanded and improved New Amsterdam • Surrendered to the English without firing a shot • Had a wooden leg

  6. William Penn • Founded the Quaker colony of Pennsylvania • Welcomed all religions • Respect for Native Americans • All men and women equal • Women could preach in public • Refused to bow to nobility • Opposed to war • Founded the city of Philadelphia

  7. Lord Baltimore(Cecilius Calvert) • Proprietary Governor of the colony of Maryland (which he never visited) • Haven for Catholics • Gave colonists a role in govt. • Generous land grants • Allowed women to own land • Act of Toleration – religious freedom to all (except Jews)

  8. James Oglethorpe • Founded the colony of Georgia and the city of Savannah • Social reformer • Haven for debtors and the poor • Allowed only small farms • Banned slavery at first • Georgia served as a buffer against Spanish incursion
