What is a Smart Home? • “A home which can include the technology to allow for devices and systems to have automatic functions which can be remotely controlled by a mobile user” (www.tracecenter.org/docs/missing_links/m18.htm) • Network devices include computers, printers, home theaters, security systems, lighting, climate control, entertainment, etc. • Accessible from any room at any time

What is “smart” about a smart home? • Communication infrastructure • Large number of sensors and actuators are connected to each other – “intelligent” • Control from outside home • See who is at front door of home from office • Call house from cell phone to turn on lights/thermostat • Use personal website to control brewing of coffee, running water, etc.

  4. Smart Home Uses • Integrated Security • Safety Systems • Independent Living (Elderly/Disabled) • Ease of Living/Comfort • Energy Saving
