  2. PROPERTIES • Smart Home: A house (or other structure) that uses a computer as a central nervous system. • A Smart Home generally will allow for automated control of features such as Blinds, Lighting, Weather, Heating, Security, Audio, Energy. • A Smart Home employs sensors, cameras, microphones, to facilitate certain automated functions, as well as allowing the home owner to directly interface with the system to adjust settings and customize preferences. • Generally, remote operation is possible from any PC or other internet-enabled device.

  3. VIDEO • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DJr8QwgLEA • 0:00 – 2:30

  4. APPLIANCE INTEGRATION • “Toshiba Home Cloud” uses artificial intelligence to determine the home owners life style and adjust and customize settings and preferences accordingly. • Can control and view the status of appliances (washer, dryer, dish washer) remotely via internet enabled devices (computer, smart phone). • Refridgerator and/or cabinets can compile inventories of items, can be integrated with other features to allow for web searches on item details or the creation of shopping lists.

  5. SECURITY • Automatic alarm activation and deactivation upon entry and exit. • Linked security cameras. • Fingerprint confirmation on control modules to ensure user has authority to control home. • Remote access requires password before control is authorized. • Remote access to security cameras gives peace of mind while away on vacations, at work, etc.

  6. VIDEO • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i73n-LTXPIM • 0:40-4:12 and 10:40-11:20

  7. BENEFITS • Less distraction with minutiae (lights automatically shut off when leaving and turn on when entering home/rooms). • Control panels throughout individual rooms can be used to control home’s features. • Efficient energy handling; customization of preferences eliminates many manual tasks (lights, thermostat). • Extreme convenience. • Voice control (via Siri-style voice recognition). • Could grant access to the home (i.e. visitors, family) safely and remotely without having to turn over keys.

  8. CHALLENGES • Smart Lock can be password-guessed if using remote access software, allowing an intruder to get into the home without keys. • Smart Home systems can possibly be hacked, allowing access to security cameras, meddling with appliances, etc. • Legal complications. Digital logs or camera video could be taken advantage of in civil or criminal matters--subject to subpoena. This wouldn’t be an issue with normal homes where such information/records are not available. • Artificial Intelligence software (so that the home can automatically analyze your preferences) seems lacking.
