In December 2011, an intense internal review of the Housing System at the University of West Florida (UWF) was completed under the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). An external review was conducted from November 13-15, 2011, by Norb Dunkel, Associate VP for Student Affairs. The review included focus groups with residents, meetings with staff, and facility tours. Key findings highlighted outstanding facilities operations and collaboration with UWF Foundation and ITS. Recommendations included staffing enhancements and improved technology in residential areas for better support and engagement.

Observations • Master Planning has been exceptional • Written using industry standards of proven occupancy demand as determined by institutional enrollment projections and planning • Outstanding Facilities Operations • Delphi LLC is intentional and well grounded; a model for LLCs • HRL Desktop has an excellent collaboration with UWF ITS to provide technology services to resident students • HRL possesses a strong, functional working relationship with UWF Foundation and is able to provide optimal financial documents for setting priorities and decision making • HRL staff is competent, well trained and dedicated to the success of the Housing program
Recommendations • Staffing additions to adequately support system growth • IT /Web Design, FT Hall Directors for established Living/Learning Communities/Maintenance and other support staff • Implement wireless technology in all residential areas • HRL must engage with new DSO related to Housing construction projects • Increase stakeholder involvement in HRL construction projects (student residents and Housing maintenance staff) • Assessment of specific internal policies and procedures • keys, workflow processes • Review duty protocols for RA staff and begin using Hall specific duty phones
