  1. Galileo Galilei 1564 - 1642

  2. Telescope? • 1609 – New invention from the Netherlands • Device that can see far away objects up close • Galileo duplicated it, then turned it toward the sky • His telescope was incredibly strong

  3. Galileo’s Telescope • With the telescope he discovered various aspects of the solar system. • Sun • Moon • Jupiter • Venus

  4. Galileo’s Sketch of the Moon • Discovered that the moon had craters. • Thought he saw seas – lava plains • Celestial objects perfect? • Against the Church

  5. Jupiter has Moons? • Visible with naked eye. • Moons only seen with a telescope • This is what it would have looked like. • Interesting story

  6. Ptolemy’s Universe The Copernicus Model

  7. Phases of Venus • In the Ptolemaic system (left), Venus always lies between the sun and the earth and it would always show a crescent phase. The Copernican system (right) predicts a full range of phases for Venus as it passes from between the sun and the earth to being on the opposite side of the sun from the earth.

  8. Galileo backed Copernicus • Claimed his observations only made sense if all the planets revolved around the Sun. • Not Earth – commonly believed then

  9. Inquisition • Galileo forced to publicly recant his conclusion. • Spent the rest of his days under house arrest. • Today, we know he was correct

  10. Galilean Thermometers
