  1. RUS-2 and GAINS have the common objectives • Elaboration of feasible technical and economically sound alternatives and scenarios of transitions to closure of INS nuclear fuel cycle

  2. RUS-2 and GAINS have some differences • GAINS is more focused on elaboration of global scenarios for the transition from the current NE system, based on thermal reactors to closed nuclear fuel cycle INS based on synergy a fast and thermal reactors • RUS-2 is more focused on assessment of advanced and innovative nuclear fuel cycle technologies within large scale Innovative Nuclear Energy System based on Closed Nuclear Fuel cycle concept

  3. INPRO CP-JI in the area of INFC Global INS CP RUS-1-GAINS IAEA Multilateral Nuclear Approaches (MNA) CP RUS-2- AINFCT-CNFC Innovative NFCT Advanced NFCT Current NFCT

  4. Interactions with GAINS • GAINS provide input to the Project regarding • general scenarios, • data on structure and reactors composition of INSCFC on a global and national levels in a long term prospects based on energy demands projections, • scale of the national nuclear energy system development strategies. • The Project on the basis of these input will elaborate • prospective NFC alternatives of a different AINFCFC options for each INSCFC scenario with identification • of most promising options based on the jointly agreed criteria in order to reach maximum utilization of nuclear material potential, • its availability, competitiveness, minimize waste generation, excellent safety and optimal NFC structure. • The Project provides to GAINS • Assessment results of a different AINFCFC options for each INSCFC scenario with identification of most promising options • GAINS further considers and adjust • the structure of INSCFC to be consistent with a structure and capability of AINFCFC which are going to serve CNFC on a global and national levels and make appropriate recommendations

  6. GAINS Time Schedule 2008 2009 2010 2007 1STCM Kick off meeting 2 STCM Selection of scenarios for nuclear power deployment and fuel cycle options. 3 STCM 4 STCM Simulation of INS architecture under storylines 5 STCM 6 STCM Study of the developed scenarios and options Analysing of the results received Preparation of conclusions on a global architecture Conclusions on a global architecture of the reviewed INS capability Compiling a final report on the study Today

  7. Interconnection of GAINS and RUS-2 2008 2009 2010 2007 Kick off meeting Jointly Élaboration of NFC options for INSCFC 1STCM Identification of AINFFC options Jointly 2 STCM Fissile&Fertile nuclear material flow analysis RUS-2 3 STCM Identification for each AINFFC options input/output parameters and characteristics RUS-2 4 STCM 5 STCM Assessment using INPRO Methodology of different AINFCFC RUS-2 Identification of most promising AINFFC options Jointly Conclusion and recommandations. Final Report Jointly 6 STCM Today

  8. CONCLUSION Taking into account that the nature and objectives of GAINS and RUS-2 are very similar, complement and common, the participants are strongly support ICG efforts to establish a very close interrelation and coordination between two projects in terms of data and results exchange as well time schedule implementation and results analysis and final report preparation.

  9. CONCLUSION(2) • Two Projects management should • establish a clear mechanism for coordination and communication, • elaborate and agree upon on common input/output data and results format and structure to be used for the needs of each Project • appoint liaison officers.
