Aboriginals: Their Legacy • The people who have lived in Canada for thousands of years • Taught the Europeans technologies such as the canoe for inland water travel, and hunting of wildlife • Aboriginal peoples number almost 1 million • Many place names come from Aboriginal words (i.e. Canada, Toronto, Saskatchewan) • Their struggle for survival has led to self-government, land ownership, and greater acceptance of native ways of life

The French: Their Legacy • The colony of New France became present-day Quebec • French is an official language • The French settlers brought farming techniques and built the first settlements • They introduced guns, kettles, and tobacco • The presence of French Canadians today is the main legacy of France’s exploration of Canada

  4. The English: Their Legacy • Won the war with France that gave Canada to England • The Hudson Bay Company essentially created the country of Canada • English is the most common language spoken • British system of government (including the queen as our head of state) and law • The queen also appears on our money (coins) • Many Anglo-Canadians are descendants of Loyalists. They still care about the British monarchy today.
