Understanding Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) for Year 7 Students

Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) are designed to assess individual students' learning styles upon entering school. These tests help in determining appropriate placement in subjects and identifying gifted students with high spatial, verbal, and numerical abilities. Notably, 3 out of the 4 sections of CATs4 do not depend on language skills, allowing assessment for non-native English speakers too. The results aid teachers in planning and setting targets, enhancing all aspects of teaching and learning. For inquiries, contact Ms. Vicki Ransome at vransome@eccoschool.com.

  2. CATS 4 These tests focus on each individual student’s style of learning. Taking these tests on entry to the school allows us to assess the student’s learning and to place them appropriately in sets for some subjects. They allow us to identify ‘gifted’ students – We now able to identify those with high levels of spatial as well as verbal and numerical ability. CATs tests are part of a national framework which correlates with curriculum Key Stages. 3 out of the 4 parts of CATs4 are not dependent on language so students with any level of English can be assessed. CATs are for students with a reading age from age 7 years 6 months to 17 years 11 months and the same test format is used throughout. The results support all aspects of teaching and learning and are used as a reference point for teachers when planning and setting targets.
