  2. Drugs are substances that change the function or the structure of the human body. Medicinesare used to prevent or treat illness or disease. Also can be used to relieve pain. Illegal drugs are generally drugs that have no medical purpose.

  3. Define psychoactive drug.

  4. Any drug that changes or alters the way the mind thinks. These can be legal or illegal.

  5. Name a common psychoactive drug found in chocolate, coffee, tea and some soft drinks. Caffeine

  6. Stimulates speed up the Central Nervous System (CNS).

  7. Define OTC Medicine.Over The Counter

  8. Medicines that can be bought without a doctor’s note. Prescription medicines are drugs that need a written order from a doctor.

  9. Prescription Medicines Tranquilizers help reduce unmanageable feelings of anxiety. Stimulantsgive users a feeling of increased energy. Anti-depressants help depressed people feel better. Sedatives help to calm people down.

  10. A Pharmacistfills a prescription. • The three types of drugs most • often prescribed are: • Antibiotics • Cardiovascular drugs • Analgesics

  11. Antibiotics fight infection.Cardiovascular drugs treat heart and blood vessel disease.Analgesics are pain relievers.

  12. How can health-promoting psychoactive drugs be harmful? MISUSE occurs through unintentional or inappropriate Use of OTC and prescription medicines. Such as not reading instructions. ABUSE of an OTC or prescription medicine occurs when the drug is taken for other than medical purposes.

  13. What is the most widely used and abused of all psychoactive drug? Alcohol

  14. Alcohol slows down the central nervous system and confuses thinking, feeling and behavior.

  15. Alcohol abuse occurs when the user Drinks too much or loses control. Alcohol abuse leads to personal, family social and financial problems.

  16. Tobacco’s effect on the body is opposite to that of alcohol. Nicotine in tobacco stimulates, or speeds up the central nervous system.

  17. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States!

  18. Some illegal psychoactive drugs. Marijuana, heroin, LSD and cocaine.

  20. Marijuana Brain: slows mental & physical functions in the body. Can produce hallucinations. Can cause: short term memory loss, oral cancer and lung damage.

  21. Heroin Most powerful analgesic

  22. Opiate (Narcotic) Brain: dulls senses, causes sleep and relieves pain. Depresses the CNS. Causes powerful physical and mental dependence. Tolerance.

  24. Hallucinogen (psychedelic) Brain: Overloads the brain with stimulation. Distorts thinking often as hallucinations. Can cause permanent mental illness and flashbacks.

  25. Stimulant Brain: excites or speeds up mental and physical activity. Causes: Overdose, heart and respiratory failure, dependence and possibly death.

  26. What is drug dependence? An illness characterized by the user’s lossof Control over use of a drug. Can be mental Or physical, or both. First stage: when the drug is used occasionally. Second stage: regular use. Third Stage: when the use of the drug becomes the Most important thing in the person’s life.

  27. What area of the brain is affected by drug dependence? Reward System

  29. There is no cure for the disease of drug dependence. There is a treatment called ABSTINANCE NEVER using the drug again.

  30. Drug dependence generally results in: Frequent use of the drug. Loss of control over use of the drug. Use of the drug in large doses. Use of the drug in spite of major physical and Personal problems caused by the drug.

  31. Tolerance is also a part of drug dependence.

  32. The body’s need to take more and more of the drug to get the same effect.

  33. Withdrawal sickness occurs when a person suddenly stops using a drug that he has been using for a period of time. Symptoms can include sickness, vomiting, irritability, sleeplessness, aches, pain and Depression.

  34. What other problems are caused by drug dependence? Physical problems: Use of some drugs can harm the major systems in the body… cardiovascular, Respiratory and nervous. Emotional and social problems Family abuse, cannot deal with life, loss of friends.. Financial and legal problems: Business loss of productivity, crime costs to society, Court cost, imprisonment and treatment.

  35. Adolescent drug use. Can prevent teenagers from achieving their best. • They may not learn the intellectual skills necessary • to function in life. • May not learn how to handle themselves in social • Situations or how to form relationships. • May expose themselves to high-risk behaviors resulting • In pregnancies, STD’s, or other drug-related disease.
