How to Get Organized • “People often invest more time planning their vacation than planning their career.” • Set clear priorities  college, career, military, travel, etc. • Keep Individual student and family planners • Regularly visit the OHS website for updates • Keep information for college/career in a specified location using folders or Naviance

Junior Month-to Month CalendarSee full year handout… • August/September • Take personality and interest inventories to explore careers – Use Naviance http://connection.naviance.com/oakmont • Register for the PSAT in the office at Student Services (Test is on Oct. 17 at OHS) • Explore colleges in Naviance and register on collegeweeklive.com • Plan next two years extracurricular and community service – keep a log in Naviance for current activities • Study hard, read, and take the most challenging courses (the highest correlate to high SAT scores) • October • ATTEND COLLEGE FAIR at WHS on Oct. 3 (6-8pm) with over 120 college reps • Plan and prepare for college visits on our holiday weekends (when colleges may still be in session) • Prepare/read the PSAT booklet, then take the test on October 17

Typical Junior Year expenses • AP Test registration and fees-$90.00, exam fee deadline March 8, 2013 (reserve a seat early! • IB Test registration and fees- Registration fee - $151, exam fee $104 both due Oct. 26, 2013 • PSAT fees- $15. Register NOW! Test day = Wednesday, October 17, 2012 (a non-school day)

  10. Junior year expenses – cont. • Prom – tickets, dress, tuxedo, dinner… • Yearbook – orders due January 31. Form on website (Applications and forms– click other) • Summer activities – College programs (UC Cosmos…), volunteer work, college classes, part-time job, learn a skill, practice a talent, job shadow, visit colleges

ACT Testsespecially recommended for BYU and Cal Poly SLO • Scores based on number of right answers • All sections: 1 – 36 ACT Composite 1 – 36 (Average of 4 tests) Must also register for writing portion of ACT test On FREE/REDUCED lunch? Ask for FEE WAIVER in College and Career Center (room 503) Register on act.org

SAT tests • Scores adjusted for guessing • Verbal = 200-800 Math = 200-800 Writing = 200-800 SAT total = 600-2400 SAT Subject Tests no longer required- but recommended for engineering and some sciences Use the FEE WAIVER for both tests and application to colleges (4 maximum) Register on collegeboard.org

Things to encourage your student to do NOW… • Create and explore your Naviance account • Get involved in community service projects • Sharpen academic skills, read newspapers, join a study group, get tutoring • Explore and build upon special abilities and interests • Increase your technology skills
