  11. Applied Technical Schools • Often referred to as vocational schools. • They offer specific training, usually in shorter periods of time than traditional community colleges or Universities. • These schools usually cost more than Community Colleges and the credits earned at them may or may not be transferable to four-year schools. • Local Examples: DeVry Institute, Bryman College, Media Tech Institute, Culinary Institute, UEI, Paul Mitchell, The School.

  12. Military • The military is an option for all high school graduates. • Eighteen year old boys are required to register with the selective service. They must register in order to be eligible for federal financial aid for college. • Information and applications for Military contact and ROTC scholarships are available in the College and Career Center.

  13. Community College/ 2 Year College • At a 2 year college, students can receive an Associate degree, pursue an applied career path, or choose to transfer to a 4 year University. • Some California CC’s offer off campus housing; refer to NAVIANCE for a complete list. • 123 California Community Colleges. • Ambassadors from Mira Costa CC are on our campus each week to meet with students in the College & Career Center.

  14. Reasons to Consider community college • You are short on college funds. • You are not sure about college. • You are not sure what kind of program you want to pursue. • Your GPA is not so great and you want to build your skills before transferring. • You’d like a career-oriented degree, such as a fashion-design or computer-certification program. • You work, or have commitments, and need a flexible schedule.

  15. 4 Year College/University • California State University (CSU) • University of California (UC) • Out of State Colleges/Universities • Private Colleges/Universities

  16. California State university (CSU) • 23 campuses • Service Area: CSU San Marcos • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.csumentor.edu • Students are evaluated through eligibility index: SAT (V&M) + (800 x GPA*) = 2900 or above (10 x composite ACT score) + (200 x GPA*) = 694 or above * 10-12 GPA

  17. University of California (UC) • 9 campuses • Visit: pathways.ucop.edu/doorways/list for a complete list of Torrey Pines High School UC approved courses • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply • Application determined by comprehensive review or holistic review process • CSIS ID # = State ID # (on student transcript)

  18. Out of state & Private colleges • Admission requirements vary by institution • Often use “committee” type admission process • Students should check with individual campuses to determine admission requirements & deadlines • Many campuses use the Common Application (Visit www.commonapp.org) • Letters of Recommendation may be required

  19. What to Consider when looking for the “right” College Match • 1. Start with who you are and why you are going. • 2. Size matters: Your college does not have to be bigger than your high school. • 3. A name-brand college will not guarantee your success. • 4. You don't need to pick a major to pick a college. • 5. You don't have to go to college right away, and it's never too late. • 6. There is a college for EVERYONE! • 7. Look for schools that match your strengths and learning style. • 8. Know yourself…Identify the priorities for you and your family. • Source: NPR, Martha O’Connell • *Remember, 84% of all colleges accept more than 50% of the students who apply to them. • Source: National Association for College Admission Counseling.
