  3. Quick Quiz • At a Kick off a team mate is front of the kicker when the ball is kicked. Ruling? • At a tackle close to the goal line the attacker releases the ball correctly and it then deflects into in-goal. May the tackler while still on the ground reach out and ground the ball?

  9. Ruck • One or more players from each team, who are on their feet, in physical contact, close around the ball on the ground • Can only occur in the field of play

  10. Joining a Ruck • Head above hips FK • Must bind around the body of a teammate with at least one arm • A hand doesn’t mean a bind • Must be on feet

  11. Rucking • Must endeavor to stay on their feet • Must not fall or kneel in a ruck • Must not collapse a ruck • Must not jump on top of a ruck • Must not ruck players on the ground • Above PK • Player must not return the ball to the ruck FK

Rucking cont. • Player must not handle the ball in the ruck • Player must not pick up the ball with their feet • Players must try to move away from ruck, they must not try to interfere with the ball • Must not fall on the ball as it is emerging from the ruck • Must not do anything that makes the other team think the ball has left the ruck FK

  13. Offside at Ruck • 2 lines each runs trough the hindmost foot of the hindmost player on that teams side of the ruck • Or the goalline • Players joining the ruck must do so from behind the foot of the hindmost player in the ruck, they may join alongside that player • If a player does not join the ruck they must retire to the offside line

  14. End of ruck • Ball leaves or is on or over goal line • Unplayable, scrum team moving forward immediately before the ruck began • If cant decide who was moving forward attackers ball

  15. Maul • Occurs when ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and a player from the ball carriers team binds onto the ball carrier • Can only occur in the field of play

  16. Joining the Maul • Heads and shoulders above their hips FK • Bind to any player • Must be caught in or bound to maul not just along the side of it • Must stay on their feet • Ball Carrier may go to ground but only if ball is made available immediately and play continues • Must not collapse or jump on top of a maul

  17. Other offences • Must not drag an opponent out of the maul • Must not take any action to make the opposing team think that the ball has left the maul FK

  18. Offside at Maul • 2 lines each runs trough the hindmost foot of the hindmost player on that teams side of the maul • Or the goaline • Players joining the maul must do so from behind the foot of the hindmost player in the maul, they may join alongside that player • If a player does not join the maul they must retire to the offside line • Player who leaves the maul must immediately retire to the offside line

  19. End of Maul • Ball or player leaves with the ball or the ball is on the ground or on or over the goal line

End of Maul Unsucc. • Remains stationary or stops moving forward for longer than 5 seconds and a scrum is ordered • Collapses or becomes unplayable • If the maul remains stationary or has stopped moving forward for more than 5 seconds but the referee can see the ball being moved a reasonable amount of time is allowed for the ball to emerge

  21. End of Maul Unsucc. • When a maul has stopped moving forward it may start moving forward within 5 seconds. If it stops again and the referee can see the ball being moved the referee allows resonable time for the ball to emerge, if it doesn’t scrum • If unplayable the referee doesn’t allow prolonged wrestling for it.

  22. End of Maul Unsucc. • If ball carrier goes to ground, including one or both knees, a scrum is orderd unless the ball is avail. Immediately

  23. Scrum after Maul • Throw in by team not in possession when maul began • If cant decide who was in possession, the team moving forward before it stopped throws in. • If neither team moving forward the attackers get the ball

  24. Scrum after Maul • Exception • If a player catches the ball direct from an opponents kick except kick off or dropout, and the ball becomes unplayable the team of the catcher throws in. • Direct from an opponents kick means the ball did not touch the ground or another player before the catcher caught it.

  25. Maul into In Goal • If a maul moves into in goal where the ball is touched down or made unplayable 5m scrum attackers ball

  26. Mark • Player must be on or behind the 22m Line • Must make a clean catch and shout ‘Mark’ • Mark can be made even if the ball touches the posts • Mark can be made in goal • Mark can’t be made from a kick off.

  27. Mark • Must be taken by player who called mark • If they cant within 1 minute, a scrum is formed at the mark with the catchers team throwing in. • Provisions of FK apply to a Mark • May chose a scrum instead, at least 5m out from ingoal

  28. Mark • Opponents must not charge a player after a mark has been awarded. PK • If the player is onside PK at mark, if player offside PK at offside line • PK may be taken by anyone

  29. Quiz • An attacker on the 10m line kicks the ball and a defender is awarded a mark. An offside player 15m in front of the defender then charges this player. Where should the referee award the PK? • At the mark • Place of if the infringing players offside line? • 10m in front of the mark?
