JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE • Massive earthquake measuring 8.9 on Richter scale struck Japan on 11 March 2011 • 10m Tsunami followed the earthquake striking the north-eastern coasts of Japanese islands • Death toll expected to exceed 20,000 currently approx. 9000 but many still missing • Massive destruction of infrastructure disrupting electricity and water supply, acute shortage of shelter, drinking water, primary health needs • Search and rescue teams deployed locally and internationally, waiting for Japanese authorities to release their humanitarian aid needs for further action • Psychosocial support of children identified as a priority: suffered many losses both directly and indirectly (loss of parent/sibling, friend/relative, home, school etc) • Nuclear reactors damaged causing meltdown and leakage into atmosphere with further evacuations expected, still posing a grave threat

LIBYA • People of Libya rose in defiance of their leader Muammer Gadaffi shortly after Egyptian revolt during February 2011 • Country was split into 2 warring factions: pro-government forces and the so-called rebels supported by local population • Massive exodus of immigrants working in Libya and locals: 300,000 fleeing across borders with Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Sudan • International NGO’s managing refugee camps with rapid repatriation of immigrants while others (Somalis) seeking asylum avoiding return to their homes • FIMA sent needs assessment team to Tunisian border (IMANA/DWW/AMU): no further action recommended, NGO’s operating on the ground coping well

Numerous casualties of the skirmishes inundating available health facilities with complicated injuries requiring specialist surgical treatment • Arab Medical Union operating on both borders attending to injuries, IMAKSA/WAMY/Islamic Relief sent 3 medical missions into region • International call for a field hospital established on the Egyptian border attending to casualties from new airstrikes and ground attacks • Humanitarian forum and League of Arab states meeting in Cairo discussing a coordinated response to the crisis and the operating of the field hospital: awaiting outcome of meeting • Fund-raising campaign initiated to support medial missions

EGYPT • Egyptians demonstrated their defiance of Hosni Mubarak’s 3 decades of corrupt rule by staging peaceful protests in various centres of Egypt • The President and his supporters reacted with violence killing more than 300 and injuring approx. 1200 of the protesters • IMA Egypt (IMAE) and Arab Medical Union (AMU) rallied their resources by assisting state services with medical supplies, manpower and other emergency supplies • Severe injuries reported: orthopaedic, neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, vascular, abdominal etc • FIMA pledged their support with financial assistance for procuring emergency supplies: fund-raising drive initiated in support of AMU/IMAE • Medical missions not ruled out: AMU confirmed their capacity to cope with the case-load

SOMALIA • Somalia traumatized by civil war between ‘Islamist dissidents’ and national government • Thousands of IDP’s housed in temporary shelters in makeshift camps surrounding Mogadishu • Appalling conditions with urgent demand for shelter, food, sanitation, water and primary health care services • Conflict aggravated by poverty, poor transportation systems, security violations, continuous influx of new IDP’S, failing agricultural production, unemployment, inadequate health services, prevalence of animal and human disease • Disease burden includes GIT and Respiratory infections, measles, parasitic infections, malnutrition and Anaemia • Somali Young Doctors Association (SOYDA) rallied to their needs with free medical camps supplying primary health services by a multi-disciplinary team (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists) • Urgent call for assistance: training and support (supplies and equipment)

PAKISTAN FLOODS (previously reported) • AL-KHIDMAT FOUNDATION: • Al-Khidmat Maternity Hospital: Quetta, Pakistan • $125,000 pledged by IMANA • SCHOOL PACKAGE • Collaboration between Al-Khidmat and FIMA/IMASA ($75,000 donated) • 3000 students benefitted • School bags, note-books, uniforms (boys and girls) distributed • PIMA: MOBILE MOTHER AND CHILD CLINIC • Collaboration between PIMA, DWW, IMA Indonesia, Jordan Medical Society and Muslim Aid (UK) • Bus converted and equipped visiting remote parts of Pakistan disrupted by the floods • 6550 patients examined and 2680 tests conducted • 2nd mobile available soon (Collaboration between FIMA/PIMA/IMANA: pledged $100,000)

LEBANON • FIMA Exco and Council members visited Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut during the last Council meeting in Beirut (September 2010) • Workshop between IMA Lebanon, Partners International Medical Aid (PIMA) and Al-Amal Association for Development and Social Care generated valuable recommendations: • Establish primary health services for Palestinian refugees in Beirut in collaboration with Palestinian Red Crescent (currently operating in West Bank and other parts of Palestine) • Monitoring and evaluation by public and commercial organizations • Involving students in the services • In-service training of professional staff and using their services optimally • Secure funding based on institution’s needs • Establishing partnerships with UNRWA: increasing specialists, improving evaluation expertise, provision of medicines • Focus on substance abuse/addictions incl. ocha pipes, cigarette smoking and other addictions

FIMA SAVE SMILE • Team of IMANA physicians conducted another mission in Sudan between 3-11 April 2011 • The team was composed of a total of 6 team members: Dr. IrfanGalaria (Plastic Surgeon), the team leader, Dr.’s KhaliqueZahir (Plastic Surgeon), Dr. Asif Malik (Anesthesiologist), Dr. Ismail Mehr (Anesthesiologist), Dr. KanwalChaudhry (Pediatrics) and Medical Student, NurainFuseini • The team was graciously hosted by SIMA and was able to perform a total of 80 cases in 5 days. The current total for this FIMA mission is now at 142. • The team will return in March of 2012 and plans on bringing a total of 4 teams.
