Background • Launch of new Employability module at Level 5 in Semester A 2011/2012 • 6 subject specific (Accounting and Finance, Economics, Event Management, HR, Marketing, Tourism) • 1 general (for general studies in business administration, business studies, and management) • Collaboration between Module Leaders in the development of the modules • Same or similar Learning Outcomes and main assessment • 5 Masterclasses

  3. Student engagement Greatly affected by: Students’ own perception, pre- and misconception Timetabling Allocation Direct correlation with their general academic performance Direct entry

  4. Areas covered CV and Covering letter Professional attitude Interview techniques Competencies (strengths and weaknesses) Employers expectations Understanding job descriptions “£15,000 – is this for real?”

  5. Professionalism Masterclasses delivered by Careers and Placement Services ASU IH Accreditation External links with industry experts, alumni, field trips

  6. Managing expectations It is all about the student Look at themselves Analyse themselves See where they fit in Face their strengths and weaknesses Intangible, theory-free content, no textbook

What we have achieved… Raised awareness about the importance of work placement, internships and extracurricular activities (as a 2:1 or 1st is not enough anymore) Raised awareness about and around Careers and Placement Services Students getting into interviews and being offered a work placement
