  2. Union Internationale des Avocats The oldest worldwide legal association  The UIA was founded in 1927. Its objectives: • To promote the basic principles of the legal profession • To facilitate the professional development of lawyers through experience sharing • To intervene in favour of imprisoned and persecuted lawyers

Union Internationale des Avocats Promoting the basic principles of the legal profession  The UIA was the first legal organisation • To establish a Code of Conduct for Lawyers in the 21st century • To adopt a resolution on multidisciplinary practice • To advocate the right to health as a basic human right • To take a strong stand in favour of the abolition of the death penalty • To adopt a resolution on ‘Globalisation, Tolerance and the Law’

Union Internationale des Avocats Facilitating lawyers’ professional development through experience sharing • The UIA has 43 commissions and workinggroupsthat produce regular scientific work and papers. • The UIA organises more than 25 theme-based seminars and training courses per year. • The UIA’s key event is its annual congress gathering some 1,000lawyers from 70countries.

Union Internationale des Avocats Intervening to defend imprisoned or persecuted lawyers • The UIA gives support tolawyers throughout the world who are persecuted or imprisoned for practising their profession.  The UIA also intervenes in countries with obstacles to the proper functioning of justice.

Union Internationale des Avocats Intervening to defend imprisoned or persecuted lawyers • In 2008, the UIA sent a mission to Pakistan to support lawyers and judges suffering from serious restrictions on their professional independence, particularly since the re-establishment of Sharia law. • In 2011, the UIA sent representatives to Tunisia following the Arab uprisings to show its admiration and its support to Tunisian lawyers in favour of the revolution. • In 2012, the UIA organized a training programme for lawyers upon request of the Kurdistan Bar Association in Erbil. • In January 2014, the UIA led a successful conciliation engagement with the Equatorial Guinea Bar association.

  9. Union Internationale des Avocats A strong international network  The UIA is a strong network providing members with activities on a global basis.  Its members are both individual lawyers, law firms, and bar associations. UIA members all over the world (in yellow)

  10. Union Internationale des Avocats A strong international network  In accordance with the different cultures and legal practices of its members, the UIA has adopted 8 official languages including 3 working languages : English, French and Spanish.

Union Internationale des Avocats A strong international network  Through the organisation of international activities, the UIA facilitates direct contact between Bar associations and Law Societies throughout the world.  The UIA also uses its international connections to enable Bars and Law Societies to play a significant role in the operations of international organisations, such as the United Nations.

The UIA has signed cooperation agreements with: • All China Lawyers Association • American Bar Association – Section of International Law / Tort, Insurance Practice Section / Section Of Litigation • Arab Lawyers Union • Inter-Pacific Bar Association • Lawasia • These agreements provide mutual visibility, exchanges, and joint activities, so that the organisations sharing core values and common objectives work together in a constructive way on an international level.
