  1. FLIP FLOPPING: What are we REALLY talking about When we use this term??

  2. WHAT IS IT? • A term used to describe a politician that changes his/her mind on an Issue and now supports a position that he/she did not support earlier. • Practically every politician is accused of being a “flip-flopper” at one time or another throughout their respective careers.

  3. Why is it Considered Bad to “Flip-Flop”? Isnt Changing your mind okay? *In order to answer this, we must first define the term “Consistency” CONSISTENCY: A group of beliefs is said to be consistent if, and only if, it is possible that each and every one of them is true at the same time. Individual claims that are inconsistent are called self-contradictory (It cannot be both raining andnot raining at the same time in the same spot).

  4. Keep In Mind: • Knowing that a person has been inconsistent does NOT tell us a thing about their position. • A person’s position must be evaluated on its own merits, not on alleged defects on the part of the person • To think otherwise is to commit the fallacy argumentum ad hominem • A position of an inconsistent person may be valid and acceptable, depending on its individual Merits
