  1. Rounding Whole Numbers Computers in the classroom Sara Boes University of North Texas April 14, 2010

  2. TEKS  This lesson plan is designed to teach 4th graders how to round whole numbers. TEKS: §111.16. Mathematics, Grade 4. (4.5)Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student estimates to determine reasonable results. The student is expected to: (A) round whole numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand to approximate reasonable results in problem situations; and

  3. Objectives The students should be able to round whole numbers to the tens, hundreds, and thousands places with ease. The students should also be able to apply this to word problems.

  4. Bloom’s taxonomy In order to round numbers, the students must remember that if the number in the digit before the number you are trying to round to is between 0 and 4 then the number in that digit stays the same. If it is between 5 and 9 then the number in the tens, hundreds, or thousands place (depending on which you are rounding to) gets increased by one. The students must analyze the number being rounded based on this information and apply what they know to round the number.

  5. Lesson Plan Rounding will be divided up into three days, one day for rounding tens, one for hundreds, and one for thousands. After teaching the concept to the students, they will get twenty minutes to go to AAAmath.com and play a game that quizzes them on rounding. After they have had practice with the game, they will complete a worksheet at the end of class that I will pick up before they leave so that I can assess how well they understand the concept and if it okay to move on in the lesson plan.

  6. AAAmath.com At AAAmath.com you can select from kindergarten through 8th grade or simply pick a subject. After picking a grade, this website gives you numerous subjects to choose from in each grade level. Not only does this website give you a brief overview of the topic but it lets you practice rounding and then allows you to play a game in which you can see how many right answers you can get within 60 seconds.

  7. Evaluating Effectiveness I will evaluate the effectiveness of using AAAmath.com by having the students complete worksheets at the end of the day to get an understanding if they comprehend the concept or are having trouble. If there are specific students that are having trouble when most of the class is not, I will try and help them catch up while the rest of the class is on AAAmath.com.
