This project, led by Sarah Zoubaa, Erin Jones, and Madi Nickander, critiques the unrealistic body types portrayed by the media, asserting that only 5% of women naturally embody these standards. We highlight the disconnect between the average American woman and the model ideal, which contributes to harmful societal pressures regarding beauty. Our design, a tree symbolizing decay, reflects media portrayals of women. We aim to create a product line that promotes self-esteem and confidence, while seeking partnerships with brands like Dove. Our commitment to usability and constructive feedback will guide our future development.

Our argument • “Only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media” • Women in the media are not representative of the American population today • “Average American woman is 5’4” and weighs 164 pounds and the average American model is 5’11” and weighs 117 pounds” • Women are negatively pressured by the media to use makeup and jewelry to glamorize themselves • The design of our tree is meant to look dead or decaying to represent how women are portrayed in the media
