Cycles in the Biosphere • Energy is transformed into usable forms to support the functions of the ecosystems • Law of Conservation of Mass: matter is not created or destroyed, it only changes form • Matter: anything that takes up space and has mass • Nutrients: a chemical substance that an organism must obtain to sustain life

  3. Biogeochemical Cycle • Exchange of matter through the biosphere • Involves living organisms (bio), geological process (geo), and chemical process (chemical)

  4. Water Cycle • Water has been found underground, in the atmosphere, and on the Earth’s surface in lakes, streams, rivers, glaciers, ice caps and oceans

  5. Water Cycle • Water is constantly evaporating from the Earth’s surface into the atmosphere (into water vapor) • Water vapor rises and cools, forms clouds • Water falls from the clouds in the form of precipitation (rain, sleet, snow, hail) • 90% of water vapor comes from surface water, 10% from plants

Carbon and Oxygen Cycle • Carbon and Oxygen are both necessary for life processes • Photosynthesis: plants convert Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen • Respiration: animals take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide • Carbon enters a long-term cycle when organic matter is buried and turns into peat, coal, oil or gas deposits

  10. Nitrogen Cycle • Nitrogen is an element found in proteins • Most nitrogen is found in the atmosphere • Nitrogen gas is captured from the air by bacteria in the soil or water • Nitrogen Fixation: process of capturing and convertingnitrogen into a form that can be used by plants

  11. Nitrogen Cycle • Nitrogen enters the food web when plants absorb nitrogen from the soil and convert it into proteins • Consumers get nitrogen from eating plants or animals containing nitrogen

Phosphorus Cycle • Essential to growth and development of organisms • Short-term Cycle and Long-term Cycle • Short-Term: cycles from soil to producers to consumers, decomposers return phosphorus to soil from dead organisms • Long-Term: weathering and erosion of rocks containing phosphorus add it to the cycle
