  1. Nutrients move through biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem Section 2.3 Cycling of Matter

  2. Vocabulary Matter- anything that takes up space and has mass. Nutrient- a chemical substance that an organism must obtain to perform life processes.

  3. How do nutrients cycle through the biosphere? • Geological processes – weathering • Biological processes - decomposers • Chemical processes - photosynthesis

  4. The water cycle

  5. The carbon cycle

  6. The carbon cycle • Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis • Autotrophs and heterotrophs release carbon dioxide during cellular respiration

  7. The nitrogen cycle

  8. The nitrogen cycle Nitrogen fixation – process where bacteria make nitrogen available to plants as nitrates.

  9. The phosphorous cycle Organisms use phosphorous to grow and develop. Phosphorous has a short term and a long term cycle. Short term is cycled from the soil to producers to consumers. Long term is cycled through deposition (rock formation) in the ocean and on land.
