  4. COUNT NOUNS!!! • There some nouns you can count: • Bananas. Croissants. Checkers. Cars. Moose. • These are called “count” nouns. (Les, Des) • And there are those you really can’t. • Sand. Water. Bread. Glue. World Peace. • These are called, “mass” nouns. (Le/La, Du/De la)

  5. Chances are, if you say it “Plural” in English, you’ll say it plural in French. • I like eggs. J’aime les oeufs. • I want some eggs. Je voudrais des oeufs. Or Singular for Singular…. • I like cheese. J’aime le fromage. • I want some cheese. Je voudrais du fromage. • I like world peace. J’aime la paix mondiale. • I want world peace. Je voudrais de la paix mondiale. EXCEPTIONS!!!! Spaghetti, Hair, Cereal, Pasta = Les spaghettis, Les cheveux, Les céréales, Les pâtes (Des) (Des) (Des) (Des)

  6. What is the difference in meaning? • Elle a mangé du pain. -vs- Elle a mangé le pain • Il a bu un coca. -vs- Il a bu le coca. • Vous voulez une salade? -vs- Vous voulez la salade? (-vs- vous voulez de la salade?) • Tu voudais des croissants? -vs- Tu voudrais les croissants?

AND FINALLY- IF THERE ISN’T ANY!! • If there isn’t any ham left, or there are no ice cubes, Or you aren’t having tea, you will replaceUN/UNE/DES, DU, DE LA with plain old DE!!! • Nous n’avons pas de thé glacé, Madamoiselle. • Je regrette, mais il n’y a plus de sucre. • Nous ne servons pas de sandwichs . • Il ne prend pas de coca; il prend un Orangina!
