France Wine Field School 2019 Purpose The purpose of this field school is to provide VIU FOM students with • an opportunity to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities in the subject of the business of wine and marketing • by exploring the complexities of the Wine Supply Chain through a combination of academic study and experiential learning. • focus on the cultural, legal, media and marketing mix influences on the various components of the Wine Supply Chain. • nature of this field school allows for a deep exploration of these and related issues.

France Wine Field School 2019 Themes There are three broad themes that provide the foundation to this field school: • the media, cultural and legal influence on local and key French wine regions; • complexities and interactions of the various components of the Wine Supply Chain; • influence of the marketing mix on the Wine Supply Chain

  6. Courses of Study • How many academic credits will I earn? • 9 credits: three for each of three completed courses • How can I earn 9 credits in 18 days? • The short answer is you can’t. The course of study is dependent on substantial study from January to April 2019. • I’m in 4th year. Will I be able to graduate this June if I go on this field school? • Yes, but graduation is dependent on you and your academic standing. Which, of course is dependent on your academic performance during the field school.

  7. Courses of Study • What courses will I take? • Mark 397, Mark 398 and Mark 399 • What if I want to go early or stay later in France? • The field school is being held between May 1 - 18 (tentative dates); how you use the time preceding or following is your decision.

Courses of Study • Mark 397: Through pre-departure field activities, selective readings, small seminars and student assignments, students will • Gain the foundational knowledge, skills and abilities needed to equip them to fully engage in the France Wine Field School. • Activities will concentrate on the wine supply chain model, both at a local and global level, with an emphasis on the cultural, legal framework and media influence on the wine supply chain.

Courses of Study • Mark 398 & 399: these two courses are the actual field school in France. • Students engaging with the destination environments will produce a series of evaluative submissions; these include- but are not limited to • A research paper on components of the supply chain • A participant observation research component on merchandising, wine event and cellar door activities • Presentation on comparative aspects of the marketing mix on select wine regions in France; • A reflective journaling exercise. • These courses are designed to bring together many of the student’s skills and knowledge.

  10. When is this Happening? • This presentation is for information purposes only. Details of the France Field School 2019 are being finalized. • Details should be finalized by December 2018; this is based on applications. • Course of pre study: January 2019 to April 2019 inclusive. • The tentative dates of the field school are 1 May to 18 May 2019. • Application DEADLINE: November 2, 2018 • Non-refundable deposit $500.00 will be charged to your student record upon acceptance into Field School. Payment will be due by November 30.

  11. During the Field School • What will happen during the field school? Will we just wander around? Go visiting wineries? • The field school will be a combination of planned activities and tours, scheduled ‘free’ time, and student directed activities. • In broad terms, the work days will be 6-7 hours in duration, beginning at 9am; with the exception of some planned activities, the evenings will be unstructured.

  17. During the Field School • Will we always be travelling as a group? • For the most part for all the structured tours and activities, yes. The unstructured and ‘free’ time will allow students independent study. • What restriction might I face when in France? • French is the language of the country; there may be language barriers.

  18. During the Field School • Warning! • Once accepted to attend the Field School, students must abide by all laws governing France while in France. They must also abide to a code of behaviour for the Field School. Failure to respect the law or code of behaviour, or any behaviour that is deemed unacceptable, will result in the student being removed from the field school, forfeiting all fees, and any fees payable to VIU as a result of their actions. It is also noted that given that successful completion of the field school is needed for the assignment of academic credits.

Dollars and Cents • ESTIMATED COSTS: • These are estimated conservative costs based on the best available information at present and capacity attendance; • Payable to VIU for France Wine Field School $ 3,600 (this amount does not include tuition which is paid separately) • Estimated Return Air Flight $ 1,200 • Meals $ 600 • Ground Transportation $ 300 • Miscellaneous (entry fees, free time activity) $ 500 • International stipend/15 hours of volunteer <$ 500> • Estimated total cost less incidentals $5,700 Details are estimated and to be confirmed once the field school is a go ahead

Application process • Application form/statement of interest to be submitted by November 2 • Contact us for the form Peter.Briscoe@viu.ca or Carleigh.Randall@viu.ca • Two faculty (names only) as references needed • Once approved your student record will be charged $500.00. • 1st deposit ($500) November 30th • 2nd deposit (½ of remainder) Jan 25, 2019 • 3rd deposit (remainder) February 28, 2019

  21. Selection Criteria • All students in the Faculty of Management including Hospitality Management, Tourism Management and Recreation and School of Business are invited to apply to the field school. • Overall, selection to the field school team will be based on a combination of the following: • Grade Point Average (GPA); 2.33 or better is preferred with GPAs of less than 2.33 considered based on exceptional references; • Two (2) faculty references (supply faculty’s name and email); • Completion of application and statement of interest. • Students in years 3 and 4 will be given priority in a descending order. • In the event that there are more qualified students than spaces available, preference will be given to those who meet the criteria and who have paid the $500.00 deposit on a first-come, first-served basis.
