  2. What we will learn? • When were dinosaurs alive? • What is a Fossil? • What do Paleontologists do? • Are dinosaurs herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores?

  3. Essential Question and Unit Questions • Does the past effect us now? Unit Questions -How long ago did Dinosaurs live? -Are there any species alive today that are considered dinosaurs? -What are Paleontologists?

  4. Why so Big??? We have an Indeterminate Growth Hormone

  5. Dino Facts • Dinosaurs lived from about 230 million years ago to 65 million years ago. • There are many species alive today that are considered dinosaurs, like turtles, sharks, and many birds. • Dinosaurs are studied now through fossils that are found in the earths surface.

  6. More Dino Facts • Paleontologists are scientists that dig up fossils (dino bones). • Dinosaurs are made up of Omnivores, Herbivores, and Carnivores. • Dinosaurs were so big because they had indeterminate growth, which means they grow the whole time they are alive (as long as their healthy).

  8. Activity • Every student would get a chocolate chip cookie and a tooth pick • We would have to imagine that we were paleontologists. The tooth pick was our tool to dig with. The cookie is the earth, and the chocolate chips are the Dinosaur bones. • Each child would then have to pick all the bones out of the dirt without using their hands.

  9. Second Activity • Students would be given materials to construct their own Dinosaurs. They could make them however they see fit. • Next, as a class, we would classify the Dino’s by size, shape, and color.

  10. TEKS • (11) Reading/vocabulary development. The student develops an extensive vocabulary. The student is expected to: (A) discuss meanings of words and develop vocabulary through meaningful/concrete experiences (K-2); • (7)ハハScience concepts. The student knows that many types of change occur. The student is expected to:(A)ハハobserve, describe, and record changes in size, mass, color, position, quantity, time, temperature, sound, and movement; • (10)ハハScience concepts. The student knows that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water. The student is expected to:(A)ハハobserve and describe properties of rocks, soil, and water; and(B)ハハgive examples of ways that rocks, soil, and water are useful.
