  13. Amendments • Amend means “to change”. • The founding fathers wanted future generations to be able to adjust the Constitution as it was needed over time. • As of 2013, there are 27 amendments

  22. Amendment #7 • Right to a jury trial in a federal civil court case where the suit is for $20 or more. • This type of case is no longer heard in federal court.

  26. Amendment #11 • No State may be sued in a federal court by a resident of another State or of a foreign country.

  27. Amendment #12 • Combined President and Vice President into one election ticket. • Before the 12th amendment the person who got he most Electoral Votes became president the person who got the second most votes becomes VP. • This worked fine before political parties came about!

Amendment #14 • Make sure all citizens enjoy all rights • States can’t take away rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. • Equal Protection Clause: No state may deprive a citizen of life liberty without “Equal protection of the laws” • Due Process Clause: No state may deny due process of laws

  32. Amendment #17 • National Senators are now chosen in elections by the people instead of by State Legislatures. (1913) • This ended corruption of appointing friends and people who give money to become a Senator.

  34. Amendment #19 • What gender you are will not be an issue in voting. • Gave women the right to vote!! (1920)

  35. Amendment #20 • Change when Congress (Jan 2) and President (Jan 20) begin their terms (1933)

  36. Amendment #21 • Repealed the 18th Amendment • Gives States the power regulate alcohol sale and consumption. (1933)

  37. Amendment #22 • President can only be elected twice • A person may only serve a maximum of 10 years as President of U.S (1951).

  38. Amendment #23 • Washington DC gets 3 electors for Elector College. (1961) • The people in D.C. finally get a say in electing the Pres. Washington DC

  39. Amendment #24 • It outlawed POLL TAX as condition for taking part in any federal election (1964)

  40. Amendment #25 • In the case of presidential disability, resignation, or death the VP takes over. • Sets government procedures in determining presidential disability. (1967)

  41. Amendment #26 • Anyone 18 and older can vote (1971)

  42. Amendment #27 • If Congress gives itself a raise, it won’t take effect until after the next election. (1992)
