Awut Deng Acuiel, Minister of Social Development • Observed high rates of Skin Wound infections among the so-called “Street Children” • National and NBG State Health Ministers involved • More resources pulled together • Medications from Health Partners International of Canada

  4. General Types of wounds • Acute Wounds Questions to ask: Is it life threatening? Is it fresh or old?

  5. Management of Acute wounds • Primary Wound closure • Delayed Primary Closure • Secondary closure

  6. Acute Wounds • Tetanus Immunization status • Bleeding at time of injury • Medical illness • Smoking History

  7. Chronic Wounds • Venous Ulcers • Pressure Ulcers • Diabetic Ulcers • Arterial Insufficiency Ulcers

  8. Underlying Causes Neglected Wound Poor Nutrition Chronic Osteomyelitis

  9. How we treated them Thorough Wound cleansing Sharp debridement of necrotic tissue Application of topical Antibiotics Wound dressing Oral Antimicrobials as needed

THE BIGGER PICTURE • Homelessness among Children in Aweil is a Big Social problem • The so-called street children are at risk of infections • There is urgent need to find solution • Community involvement is essential • Appeal to the Government, NGO’s and community at large for support to our homeless children
