Unanswered Research Questions (1) • DIAGNOSIS: • We are missing the majority of affected individuals - Access • How to diagnose when there is no history of maternal exposure • No clear neurobehavioral phenotype • How to separate confounders: alcoholism in family, criminal behavior, psychopathology

  3. Unanswered Research Questions(2) • ETIOLOGY: • Why only a fraction of exposed are affected? • What systems are affected and how? • How can we prevent damage by pharmacological interventions ? (E.g. oxidative damage)

  4. Unanswered Research Questions(3) • PREVENTION: • Primary: prevention of drinking, or prevention of pregnancy. • Secondary: harm reduction in pregnancy, or termination of pregnancy. • Tertiary: early diagnosis of FASD - prevention of secondary disabilities.

  5. Unanswered Research Questions(4) • INTERVENTIONS to minimize postnatal-childhood damage • Educational system • Family • Community • Correctional services • Intervention to decrease drinking and restore self control in addicted women
