WASC / OHS. 2011-2012. Why is WASC Important?. Gives our school accreditation so our students’ diplomas mean something!! Without accreditation: API/AYP doesn’t mean much!! Students complete everything we ask of them to graduate and when they do… NO DIPLOMA!!

Why is WASC Important? • Gives our school accreditation so our students’ diplomas mean something!! • Without accreditation: • API/AYP doesn’t mean much!! • Students complete everything we ask of them to graduate and when they do… NO DIPLOMA!! • State takes over the school… gives everyone a pink slip and rehires… NOT BY SENORITY • Because we care about the future of all our students

What is the WASC Process? • Ongoing, repeating, 6 year process! • Where are we now in 2011-2012?! • Year 5!! • Assessing/collecting evidence of OHSs’ progress on the WASC recommendations from the 2010 WASC revisit • Completion of a WASC self-study (Mr. Salehi/coordinator) • Year 6 • WASC visiting committee • Determines if we receive accreditation and for how long

To Receive Accreditation We Must!! • Have 5 outcomes: • 1) Must have the involvement of all staff and shareholders • 2) Must have the clarification and measurement of what all students should know, understand, and be able to do through expected school wide learning results (ESLRS) and academic standards • 3) Must have the gathering and analyzing of data about students and student achievement • 4) Must have the assessment of the entire school program and its impact on student learning in relation to expected school-wide learning results (ESLRS), academic standards, and WASC/CDE criteria • 5) Must have an updated single plan for student achievement

The WASC/CDE Criteria? • 5 areas we will be judged on!! • 1) Organization: Vision and Purpose, Governance, Leadership and Staff, and Resources • 2) Standards-based Student Learning: Curriculum • 3) Standards-based Student Learning: Instruction • 4) Standards-based Student Learning: Assessment and Accountability • 5) School Culture and Support for Student Personal and Academic Growth

What is the Self-Study? • An in depth look into OHS that answers two questions: • 1) How are the students achieving? • 2) Is the school doing everything possible to support high achievement for all its students? • Comprised of: • 3 groups • End Result: • Self-study report (Mr. Salehi/coordinator) • Updated 3-5 year single plan for student achievement • Full 6 year accreditation!!

  7. 3 Groups • Leadership Team • School Administrators • WASC coordinator • Home Groups (All Teachers) • School subject areas (Departments) • Students • Parents/Community • Focus Groups (All Teachers) • 5 groups that do an in depth look into the 5 WASC/CDE criteria: • Organization • Curriculum • Instruction • Assessment and Accountability • Student Culture and Support

How is WASC Different at OHS this year? • WASC and CAPP teams have merged together • Home groups will be led by individual department team leaders • Focus groups will be facilitated by CAPP team leaders • 1) Organization: Quillantang, Henchy • 2) Curriculum: Cervera, Lee • 3) Instruction: Uriwck, Gathman • 4) Assessment and Accountability: Claycamp, Thomas • 5) School Culture and Support: McConville, Meyring, Morrison

  9. What is Asked of You?! • Participate! • Attend your home and focus group meetings and provide meaningful information in a concise manner

  10. 2011-2012 WASC GOALS • Involvement of all staff and shareholders • Create an effortless and continuous WASC process • Simplify and streamline the WASC process for teachers • To provide more meaningful information in a fast and efficient manner

What to Expect Next? • Look for an email from me that will include the following: • Your Focus Group • Our Current ESLRS • Summary of WASC recommendations from 2010 revisit • Summary of OHS 2011-2012 academic goals from the single plan for student achievement • WASC meeting dates • WASC online resources • Meet in your home groups to revise ESLRS 9/15 • Any Questions?
