Fathers as Trainers • Ephesians 6:1-4 – “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” • Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Fathers as Trainers • Definition of Training: • To develop or form the habits, thoughts, or behavior of (a child or other person) by discipline and instruction: • To make (a person) fit by proper exercise, diet, practice, etc., as for an athletic performance • To discipline and instruct (an animal), as in the performance of tasks or tricks. • To bring (a plant) into a particular shape or position by bending, pruning, or the like

Teaching of a Father • Definition of Teaching: • To impart knowledge or skills • Give instructions • Instruct; tutor; train; educate; • Inform; enlighten; school;
Teaching of a Father • Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house” • Deuteronomy 6:20-25 – “When your son asks you in time to come saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statues… then your shall say to your son”
Teaching of a Father • Examples: • Abraham • Genesis 18:17-19 – “he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice”

Discipline of a Father • Definition of Discipline: • Training to act in accordance with rules; • To punish or penalize in order to train and control; • correct; chastise • To bring to a state of order and obedience by training and control
Discipline of a Father • Hebrews 12:5-11 – “no chastening (discipline) seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” • Proverbs 13:24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” • Proverbs 29:15 – “The rod and rebuke give wisdom” • Proverbs 29:17 – “Correct your son, and he will give you rest”
Discipline of a Father • Example: • Eli • I Samuel 2:12 – “Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord” • I Samuel 3:11-13 – “his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them”
