CLARIN • Pan-european access to language resources for language researchers • EC-project, preparatory phase 2008-2010 • WP2 (MPI): technical infrastructure (e.g. authentication, authorisation) • WP7 (Helsinki University): legal framework (e.g. identity federation) • 50 000 researchers (end users) • 171 institutions (potential SAML SPs?) • http://www.clarin.eu/members • 32 countries (a notable eduGAIN use case)

CLARIN AA problem • Authentication • authenticate a researcher using his/her home organisatino credentials • Authorisation • End user must commit to the End User License Agreement (click ”I accept” button) • Some resources are open to anyone • Some resources are open for any academic end user (schacHomeOrganisationType?) • Some resources need individual permission (needs a workflow) • This is a Virtual Organisation (VO) problem! • (more or less) centralised management of EULAs (user needs to accept the same terms only once) • (more or less) centralised management of individual permissions

Clarin demo/pilot • Five Clarin Centers form a (legal) entity • Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of sciences and humanities (www.bbaw.de) • Institut für Deutsche Sprache (http://www.ids-mannheim.de/) • Instituut voor Nederlandse Lexicologie (http://www.inl.nl/) • Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (http://www.mpi.nl/) • CSC the Finnish IT Center for Science (http://www.csc.fi/) • The (legal) entity joins three federations • SurfFederatie • DK-AAI • Haka • The (legal) entity registers 5 SPs to the 3 federations • Then demo the concept of cross-national access of CLARIN resources • Goal: done 2009
